We try to do something different every day. You JUST can't lounge around on the road, or you end up looking as big as the road! So, we hike, bike, stroll, or take drives. Today, was a drive and hike day to the eastern portion of the monument, right to the Ajo mountains, on what else, Ajo Mountain Drive! The drive is a combo of twisty asphalt and gravel, interspersed with BIG rocks buried in the roadbed. A perfect jarring Jeep ride. Our hike stop was at Arch Canyon. A relatively short 2.5 mile roundtrip hike. Do not be misled, flatlanders. The last half mile rose about 800 feet with considerable rock scrambling, which took us around to the back side of the pictured arches to a high saddle. Pilot's pic is along the way as we approach the canyon and the greener pic is south towards Mexico along the drive after getting our height-averse adjustment.
